The world is witnessing an unprecedented surge in gambling activities, raising alarms among health experts about the potential for a public health crisis. Recent research from an international commission has highlighted the urgent need for government intervention to address the growing accessibility and normalization of gambling.

The Global Gambling Landscape

A comprehensive report by the Lancet Public Health Commission on Gambling, which comprises 22 medical doctors and PhD researchers, underscores the extensive impacts of gambling expansion worldwide. Titled “Time for a Public Health Response to Gambling,” the report emphasizes that the proliferation of gambling opportunities poses significant threats not only to individual health and well-being but also to financial stability and interpersonal relationships.

With the legalization of casino gambling in numerous countries and states, coupled with the rapid migration of gambling activities to online platforms, the commission warns that these trends could lead to widespread public health issues. The report indicates that global gaming revenue is projected to reach nearly $700 billion annually by 2028, with gambling now legal in approximately 80% of countries. This accessibility, particularly through online channels, raises concerns about the potential for addiction and related harms.

A Call for Public Health Action

The Lancet commission advocates for a paradigm shift in how governments and policymakers approach gambling. They argue that gambling should be treated as a public health issue akin to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. The report calls for effective gambling regulation that limits public exposure to gambling through advertising restrictions and promotes universal support and treatment programs for those affected by gambling-related harms.

Critically, the report critiques the prevailing “responsible gambling” model, which places the onus of seeking help on individuals. The researchers argue that this approach is inadequate and diverts attention from the systemic issues within the commercial gambling ecosystem. They stress the need for a more comprehensive strategy that addresses the root causes of gambling-related harms rather than merely focusing on individual responsibility.

The Dangers of Online Gambling

One of the most pressing concerns raised by the commission is the rise of online gambling, which they describe as “more intense gambling products.” The rapid pace and constant accessibility of these platforms blur the lines between gaming and gambling, making it easier for individuals to engage in potentially harmful behaviors.

Heather Wardle, a co-chair of the commission and a professor of gambling research at the University of Glasgow, highlights the alarming reality that anyone with a smartphone has access to a virtual casino at any time. The sophisticated marketing strategies employed by gambling companies further complicate the issue, making it easier for individuals to start gambling while simultaneously making it harder to stop.

Industry Responses and Misleading Claims

The report anticipates pushback from the gambling industry, which often claims that their products are enjoyed by millions without adverse consequences. The commission counters these assertions, labeling them as misleading and emphasizing that governments have a responsibility to protect citizens from harmful and addictive products.

In response to the growing concerns, the American Gaming Association (AGA) has stated that the industry is committed to advancing responsible gaming initiatives and expanding consumer resources to promote safer gambling practices. AGA Strategic Communications Senior VP Joe Maloney expressed support for ongoing discussions and the adoption of best practices in the industry.

The Need for Comprehensive Regulation

The Lancet commission’s findings underscore the critical need for comprehensive regulation of gambling activities. By treating gambling as a public health issue, governments can implement strategies that not only protect vulnerable populations but also foster a healthier relationship with gambling as a whole. The call for action is clear: without significant changes in policy and regulation, the potential for a public health crisis looms large as gambling continues to permeate societies worldwide.
